Title: Snowshoes from Robert E. Peary's final polar expedition

Description: This pair of snowshoes is from Admiral Robert E. Peary's final polar expedition in 1908-1909 for which he was recognized by Congress as having been the first to reach the North Pole, an achievement made with his African American associate, Matthew Henson, and four Inuit--Oatah, Egingwah, Seegloo, and Ookeah. There is evidence to suggest that this particular pair of shoes were used by either Peary or Henson personally. Of the sixty pairs of snowshoes Peary ordered for the expedition, he specified only two pairs to be made with raised heels--as this pair has--to facilitate backing and turning. Those two pairs were designated for Peary and Henson.
