Title: Mississippi Valley Sanitary Fair Raffle Prize Quilt

Description: This silk quilt made with the national colors was used as a raffle prize at the Mississippi Valley Sanitary Fair in St. Louis in 1864 to raise funds for the Western Sanitary Commission. The W.S.C. was a charitable organization that provided supplies and services for sick and wounded soldiers, orphans, refugees, and freedmen in the Trans-Mississippi region of the United States during the Civil War. The quilt was reputedly donated to the fair by Gen. William T. Sherman, but no evidence to support that claim has been found.
