Title: Patent Breechloading Sporting Rifle

Description: One of two patent breechloading rifles in the collection by John P. Gemmer, a St. Louis gunsmith who acquired the famed Hawken gun shop in the 1860s. Though the gun is marked "Patent Applied For," no evidence has been found that Gemmer actually applied for a patent or was granted one for this particular breechloading system.
