Title: Eisenbrant Double English Flageolet of Dr. John B. McDowell

Description: This flageolet was brought to St. Louis in the late 1830s by physician John B. McDowell when he moved to St. Louis from Baltimore. He continued to practice medicine in St. Louis until he died of cholera in 1868. The instrument is an Eisenbrant (active Baltimore, MD, 1819-1850) Double English Flageolet. A five piece instrument related to a recorder, its high pitched tones were used to mimic bird sounds, teach captive birds to sing, or to rise above the noise of a dance floor, especially in the popular Quadrille Dance of the 19th century.
