Samuel Kennard was born January 11, 1842, in Lexington, Ky. During the war he served as a lieutenant in Guibor's Battery (Confederate). He died December 7, 1916, in St. Louis.

Letters of Samuel Kennard to his parents briefly describe the affairs of Guibor's Battery in Mississippi and Tennessee. Includes account of a naval engagement at Plum Point Bend on the Mississippi River above Fort Pillow, Tenn., May 10, 1862; brief account of conditions in Vicksburg during the siege; and a loyalty oath.
