Description: The,gold Langley Medal; obverse has robed woman sitting on top of globe, holding a lighted torch and scroll; reverse has two torches. Came in a dark green leather case. named for the third secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, Samuel Pierpont Langley, and is awarded to persons contributing to aeronautics and astronautics. Lindbergh was named the recipient on June 11, 1927 at a reception by the National Press Club in Washington DC upon Lindbergh's return to the US following his historic trans-Atlantic flight . The medal was presented on December 8, 1927 by Chief Justice William Howard Taft, Chancellor of the Smithsonian, at a ceremony of the Board of Regents in Washington. Conferred on Lindbergh by Dr. Charles C. Abbott, acting Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution June 11, 1927 at a reception at the National Press Club, Washington DC in an auditorium which seated 8,000. It was later presented to him by Chief Justice William Howard Taft, Chancellor of the Smithsonian, December 8, 1927 at the annual meeting of the Board of Regents in Washington DC.
