Title: Records of Company I, 138th Infantry, 35th Division, American Expeditionary Force: Reunion Association Series

Description:

Materials from the Company’s postwar Reunion Association constitute the single largest series in the collection. Among these are a number of specialized and general membership lists for the period 1930 to 1973. The specialized lists include a list of reunion chairmen and reunion and picnic locations and dates for the years 1936 to 1971 and a list of reunion chairmen (with deceased chairmen noted), locations, and number attending for the years 1930 to 1969. In addition, there are four partial lists and complete list of deceased Company I veterans for the years 1934 to 1932; many of the entries on these lists are annotated with the man’s place of burial.

The general membership lists include lists of local and/or out-of-town veterans of Company I for the years 1935, 1937, 1938, 1943 (updated from 1941 list), 1961 (updated from 1955 list), 1966 through 1971, and 1973.

Although there is much duplication in both the specialized and general lists, they should all be consulted; some have handwritten annotations that others do not, and some are even annotated past the date of the list.

The preponderance of material in the reunion association series documents the group’s activities between 1934 and 1948. This fact, along with the relative lack of such material for the pre-1934 and post-1948 periods, dictates an exception to the arrangement of series chronologically by document type. Materials dealing with the reunion association’s 1934 to 1948 activities are arranged simply chronologically, without regard to document type. Mixed under the heading of “activities” are minutes of meetings, announcements, and reports of events and annual reunions, printed tickets for social events, and press clippings about Company I and its veterans.

Materials dealing with the pre-1934 and post-1948 periods return to the previous arrangement (chronological by document type), and are fragmentary, consisting of a few printed items and miscellaneous press clippings. The printed items include a songsheet from the 1926 reunion, a ticket from a 1933 dance, a 1955 invitation to a memorial service for the commander of the 138th Infantry, and commemorative items for two deceased Company I veterans. The press clippings deal mostly with the veterans as individuals rather than as an organized group and include several undated items at the end of the folder. A final folder in the reunion association series contains bills and receipts dated 1968 to 1976 from florists, printers, and restaurants who provided services to the group.
