Dined. Return, work on Reveille smaller subjects. Dickinson and Randall called, took one. Did another, then out about 7 1/2. At Mr [Joseph] Greatbatchs [174 Mulberry St.] the rest of the evening. He’s had a legacy left him from a certain uncle, don’t know what ‘tis yet.

23. Wednesday. Down town. Called at [Thomas W.] Strongs, got subjects for a writing up “Oldpot.” Saw [Cornelius] Mathews, settled subjects, returned and at then. Did one in time for Randall calling, then at the other. Finished both about. [Alfred] Waud coming up, out with him to supper, (or rather dinner for my part, as I had had none) at the elder Goslings. Then a bit of a stroll, attracted by the true sunset to the North River, a pier beside the old Jersey one. Parted about 8, I hav to my room [290 Broadway], and bed. [Alfred] Swinton came up and gave me a call this
