“Sure an’ I’d give $50 if it were the Bristol that’s in England.” Other Irishman “And if I were there sure I’d give $50 to be back again!” “— An’ what id ye do here — gaith to there where the money is!” On they went hammer and tongs — butcher strong on behalf of England. “Sure they’d never ask ye for half an hours work in England widout payin’ ye for it!” — “And ye get good porther there, an’ the beer there’s better than the wine here!” Now good luck to thee honest butcher for that first sentiment, let alone the other. / Arrival at Jersey at 9 o’clock; found the room whitewashed and chilly-looking, [Jabez] Wing abed on the floor.

24. Saturday. To New York. Made a call on Warren Butler, and purchased knife for lithographic purposes. Getting things in order during the rest of the day. Backgammon with Wing in the evening, and he after two glasses of cyder-brandy manisfests decided symptoms of ultra-bacchanalization. attempting to walk upon one floor plank in proof of his sobriety, he staggers hither and thither to a most absurd rate. Subsequently tells legends of family feud and — goes to bed.

25. Sunday. Writing all day, letter to my dear Mother [Naomi Butler Gunn], to Naomi [Gunn] and to Sandeman. Did not stir out.

26. Monday. Making design for poster for Butler. A letter from [William] Boutcher, and a right friendly and jolly one. Book-culture hath made him a fine fellow. But why have I no letter from her [Mary Bilton].

27. Tuesday. Stones for lithographing arrive from Philadelphia. Finish-
