present part of the afternoon. Sat up [with William Barth] talking till some three o’clock I think. [William] Shakspere, Homer, [Lodovico] Ariosto & finally Sweeden borg. and

6. Monday. Breakfast — then at about 1/2 past 7 to the Goverment boat and was rowed over to Castle Garden — thin snowflakes falling, a leaden sky, and buildings thinly coated with snow. To Office. [Edwin A.] Weed called. Drawing till evening, Fred Greatbatch calling. Met Joe [Greatbatch] as I walked down town to supper. Bed early after a little reading.

7. Tuesday. Down town. Snow and mud all the way. Winter all the year round it would seem. To Lantern Office. Hinsdale, [Frank] Bellew, [John] Brougham & [Fitz James] O’Brien. Saw Lockington. Called at Reveille Office, and at [Cornelius] Mathews’. Nought for Reveille, called at [John N.] Genins, met Warren Butler who told me of the non-departure of his brother [Joe Butler]
