4. Thursday. Drawing. Britt the Engraver called, & Copcutt, both desirous of seeing [Frank] Leslie (alias Carter). Lockington called twice, second time at 1 1/2. Out with him, dining together at Sweeny’s, then down town, called at Lantern Office, [Thomas] Powell, [John] Watson &c. Bunnell & Price’s, then to [Edwin A.] Weed with big Picayune drawings. Return & drawing on wood, finished drawing No 2 to-day. Copcutt called again. [Alfred] Waud came, supped with him, boot buying, both to my room & drawing on wood. Frank Royal & a boy-friend of his came, to look over my portfolio’s. Drawing on till 11, things for Lockington, Waud off at 9 1/2.

These be different times from King’s Road evenings, & loving trysts about Grays Inn. Heigho? [words crossed out]

5. Friday. Leslie called. Talk of a certain new Illustrated paper, projected by the great [P.T.] Barnum, calculated I hope to lick the wretched Fleece’em’s into immortal smash. Lockington’s boy called, Davis called & Mac Namara, who told of divers knoweries of [Charles F.] Anderson & his hopefuls [Fred and Pelham Anderson]. Breakfasted at Sweeneys, dined there
