January. 1852

1. Thursday. Made sketch of Louis Napoloen Coup d’E’tat. Joe [Greatbatch] and a fellow employee calling while at it. Finished, dressed, and out. Called at Mrs [Rebecca] Kidders, sat chatting apropos of the day. [Arthur] Mason called in. Out, through the glad frosty, snow covered streets to Canal. Looked in at Dobs [177 Canal St.]. Thence to Holts [168 Duane St.], for Mr [Henry] Hart. He not within. In the parlor &c. Mrs [Mary] Holt, [Samuel] Blood &c receiving [receiving] their New Year’s calls. Back to home and coffee, all alone in the dining room. Out again, walk down Broadway, on the Battery. Castle Garden. Returning passing Washington Market had the purse-dropping scoundrels try their vocation on me, (for the third time, nigh to the same spot.) Evening Joe called, and then Mr Hart. Out in company, stroll down Broadway. Then to Reade Street, Whiskey & “Punch.”
