rain-threatening day, down town. Post Office, Engravers, Lockington, Lantern & Reveille Offices. Met Fagan — he’d not been able to hunt up my quarters at Niagara, though present. Wells & Webb & Brooklyn. Return, tired out at 7 and lay down. Davis came & anon Joe [Greatbatch]. Joe off for Australia next month.

22. Sunday. To Governors Island, from the Battery. There all day in company with [William] Barth, divers other folk about though. At night abed in an upper room of the Hospital, Barth giving up his bed to Beukman who was sick. Lay talking of old times & anticipatory Australian experience till past midnight.

23. Monday. New York. Reveille & Lantern Offices. At my room drawing. Reveille office again in the afternoon. Drawing in evening, dull enow.

24. Tuesday. Finished two cuts by noon, to dinner & to [William] Roberts, he out. Return & (after a call on [Cornelius] Mathews &c) work. Supping at Reade Street, met one of the Holtein Boarders, who inquired much after Mr [Henry] Hart.

25. Wednesday. Did drawing on wood, with intent to take it to [Thomas] Strongs; then to Roberts with two cuts, saw him, left them. To Lantern Office, no money from ever-promising never-performing [Thomas] Powell. Return, Barth came and stayed hours twain, during which I did big Reveille cut, a plashing rain-storm deluging
