a brisk journey to Castle Garden for linen. Dead leaves strewing the ground of the old Battery, and more fluttering down in the boisterous wind which roared wintrily through the boughs and out on the water; the which leapt about in cold indigo-tinted waves; rocking the boats furiously. Red-yellow light all along the horizon. All looked wintrily and melancholic. “Traveller” Office closed, so back to supper. Afterwards to Brooklyn, calling first on Dunsiers, then at [William] Roberts, then at Dunsiers again.

14. Tuesday. Drew till 11, then down town. To “Traveller” Office, then to Spruce Street, (previously however to the Picayune Office, where I saw [Joe] Scoville and his employer [Dick] Hutchings. The sketch accepted, I to have $3 for’t, on paper. [words crossed out] To “Leader” Office, [Thomas] Picton well pleased with his portrait, (gratis work,) talk with him & Tom Frank. Imbibition together in trio. They play billiards together, I draw Cartoon on the wall. To dinner at 2 1/2. Dozed part of afternoon. Drew till 10 1/2, finished sketch for Picayune. A thoughtful pipe, pacing up and down Broadway, then returned, scribbled a little, and now am going to bed.

15. Wednesday. Made another drawing by 10, then down town. To Traveller Office, then to Picayune. While there Hutchings came in with number of the just issued “Traveller” in hand, and gave it to Scoville, indicating the three onslaughts on to the Pick in it. They passed it to me little kenning I was author of ‘em, and I read it (!) gravely, with the
