sings an excellent song. Saginaw Bay on our right undescried, and wide Green Bay, (with remembrance of Dauphin Williams.) Talk with a man I take to be a shrewd Scotsman, and books lent, belonging to a Detroit editor attorney, Newberry. Whitney & Foster’s state documents touching the Lake Superior. Particulars of the death of Douglas Houghton, shrewd and enthusiastic engineer.) Scribbling much despite vessels motion. Meantime every one was disporting himself after his fashion. Fellows gambling in the bar saloon. One, and Pittsburg young fellow lost nigh $1000 to two or three blacklegs; he drank all the time. Scoundrels were pretty well known by the Captain of the boat [Sam Ward], white hatted, moustached and well got up. The victim pawned his ring to gamble, and borrowed $100 to redeem it from a friend. He gave notes for part of the $1000, and was advised to telegraph on to stop their payment. But the knaves had sold ‘em on board, and that night stopped at Mackinaw. This an error. A tumultuous merry card part of women, no gambling, musical laughter and uproarous clamor. Talks with Wheeler, his plump, red faced, good tempered wife. With Miss Compston, [George M.] Swans pleasant sister. [Thompson P.] Mc Elrath card-playing as wont. Notable dinners, and feeds generally. Some little reading, much writing, — rain outside in the afternoon. I in great glory, in virtue of my capacity as “[New York] Times” correspondent, and I may as well say it, tremendously popular. As the day drew to a close we neared Mackinac. And at 11 1/2 I turned in, a cool night, so slept right well, Mc Elrath out doing the like till 2 or so.
