Transcription:

—Several Englishmen have made themselves quite celebrated in [Giuseppe] GARIBALDI’s service. Col. [John Whitehead] PEARD, known as “the famous shot,” was dubbed a Colonel at the capture of Messina. Col. [John] DUNNE who was one of “the Light Brigade” in their celebrated charge at Balaklava, and was decorated with the Victoria Cross; and our old acquaintance, Col. [Hugh] FORBES, of John Brown notoriety, is commandant of the town and fortress of Melazzo. Capt. STYLES, formerly belonging to the English Guards, and a Crimean campaigner, is now in London, recruiting for the Garibaldian service.
