Over the “Great Eastern.”

talked to Sally [Edwards] for the best part of the evening. Left at 11 1/2, [Jesse] Haney accompanying me to the “Optimus” subsequently.

25. Wednesday. To the “Great Eastern,” finding Sally, Matty [Edwards] and [Jesse] Haney on the paddle-box, looking out for me. Over the vessel, up-stairs and down, the day torridly-hot, the crowd immense. (17,000 persons visited the ship during the day, as we read subsequently.) Had Matty under my convoy part of the time, anon Sally. Lost our two companions on their descending into the engine-room, we failing to effect the same, in consequence of the crowd. Explored as much as we could, promenaded the deck for half an hour, then left at 11 1/2. Saw Sally home, through leafy, deep-green Washington Square, having ice-cream by the way. Found Matty already at home, in the store, her mother [Sarah Edwards] there, and customers. The hot, idle noon-tide without, the store with its chance perspective of sewing-girls and the two girls themselves made a pleasant picture, one I liked to linger in for ten minutes. Matty has cut off a good deal of her hair recently, as it was growing thin about the middle parting, and now wears the severed portion in a long plait affixed to the rear, beneath a pretty net. Her face bears it well enough; she can’t look otherwise than pretty. As she stood laughing and talking, in her neat
