Well Father I sit down to write you a few lines to let you know that I am well at presant and that we are agoing down the river in a few days to go up red river we left Black river the 3rd day of this month there is a larg fleet fiting up for to go up Red river there is a great many troops at Vicksburg at presant Father I saw more negroes the other day out at blacks r Black river than I ever saw in my life be fore I do be lieve I never saw such a sight be fore in my life I was on picket the day they got there and I had a good chance to see them every thing is quiet out there at this time Well Father we are camped just in side the [word unclear] at Vicksburg near fort hill we have got a nice place to camp as far as the ground in concerned but our water is very bad I wish that we would leave here for I am sick of Vicksburg There is a great many old regiments leaving here they are a going home on furlow they reenlisted as veterans there any [word unclear] Iowa reg. left our Brigade yesterday enrout for their homes I dont know but I dont think at this time that I will every be a Veteran soldier i think that if I serve my time out that will be ennugh for me Father I have not mutch to write I have not received a letter from you for several days write soon your son
