Feb 10th 1864


Dear sister I sit down to write you a few lines to let you know that I am well at presant and that I got a letter from you to day dated Jan 25th sinia I was to here[?] that you was well and that the children and John was well sister I have done some hard marching since I wrote to you last we left Helena 28th for Vicksburg we landed there the 31st on the 1st we went ashore and started for black river we traveled untill 8 oclock be fore we got to any water when we did it find some it wasnt fit for a boy to drink on the 3rd we started on towerd black river we traveled three mils that evening at day light we started for black river at sundown we crossed the river and camped for the night at 11 oclock we got up and started for Jackson we marched untill day light when we stoped and got some think to eat as soon as we eat we started on towerd Jackson we marched untill dark when we stoped for the night 13 mils from Jackson at day light we started back to black river with the [word unclear] train we marched all day very hard at sundown we got back to the river then we stoped for the night they put down the [word unclear] that night and at day light we crossed the river and marched down the river untill we came to the railroad where we are at presant we have had a hard time for the last 10 day we havent had had any tents since we left Vicksburg sister I must close

sinia I wrote you a letter the 19th of Jan and I sent you a set of jewelry I got a letter form James Massey the other day and I did intend send it in the letter I wrote to Father yesterday but I for got it I will send it to you and you can give it to him him so good by sister your dear brother
