Title: Letter signed Maj. Gen. Abbott, Head Quarters Louisville Barracks, Louisville, Ky., to Bill [William C. Jones], January 18, 1863

Description:

States that Abbott seeks reassignment to post in St. Louis.

Transcription: Louisville Ky Jan 18 1863

Friend Bill:

I am on duty here as Chief[?] of discharge dept. I believe there is established in St Louis the same department.

Now in the language of Artemas Ward, “My wife is expecting an episode in the family.” And she is urgent that I should get as near her as St Louis at least. Will you visit head quarters and ascertain for me if I can get the same post there, as I shall not be fit for duty for several months. If not, by visiting some other department you might secure me a place. If you will give this your immediat[?] attention you will oblige an old friend, who will repay the favor.
