John Martin

Dear Sir

I Should have written to you Sooner than this but for being Shuved around. We arived at Louisville after a plesent voyage from pontiac found the place in great confusion the Stores were all Shut up and no business doing at all they had intrenchments throwed up around the City and most all the loyal ceitesens under arms we Staid thare about one week and then Started after Bragg we have been on the forse march for two weeks and stoped at the Crab-Orchard to recrute up we took Several prisoners on the way no need of telling you how they acted for they acted as usual very Stubern: all Buels[Buell’s] men are very mutch out with him they Say that they could very easeley of captured him if he would let them the way the hed generals are a doing now I am afraid this war will never end. the Saying down here is that Bragg and Buel[Buell] ar [words unclear] all very mutch [word unclear] with all the generals Bragg came [word unclear] for provisions he has got[?] 40 thousand men and about [word unclear] of a train of provisions I no dont but [word unclear] will it if they do it[?] we have 2 hundred thousand men are withen 100 miles of him and are Stoped and I Supose have to to Louisvill[Louisville] we have been garding Secesh property all along the road or Sence we came to Louisvill[Louisville] I have not mutch time to rite any more I forgot to tell but I Supose that you have herd it all ready Jeff C davis Shot general Nelson while we ware at Louisville and I Hope Before long that a greate many of our generals will Share the Same fate give maggey a kiss for me I rote to Stephen and Marion and Joseph and Several others and got no answer give my love to all the childrens and lizybeth tell hur to rite as Soon as you get this for I dont bleve you will tell hur I have not time or i would write to hur

give my respects to Stephen and tell him to rite let one know how all the things are going on around thare I want you to do as I told you about what little I have got devide it in fore Equile Shares one Share to Stephen and one to maggey and Mary ann and Johana I sent the note and ten dollars by Squire Murphy to give to Joseph Martin five dollars Jo was give you five dollars on what I owe I you I must go
