January the 3rd 1865 —

My Dear Father and mother once more I take the present opportunity of writing you a few lines to let you know how I am getting a long. I am not very stout yet but am able to be on duty. I hope these few lines will find you all well and doing well. I have never got any letters yet since I left home and I am very anxious to hear from you. I want you to write just as soon as you get this and tell me all the news. I had thought a few days a go that we would start for our commands in a few days but now it looks like we might stay here all winter. this is a very lonesome place to me I cant hear my news and I would just a bout as soon be any other Place as where I cant get any news. we are on short rations here but I cant tell how long we will remain so. I guess the Quarter masters stole rather to much and so they had to cut our rations down to make every thing come out right.

we have a great deal of duty to do here but it is not hard and so we get a long very well.

When you write Direct as follows

I have nothing to write if I could hear from home then I might have more but as it is I am without news. it has rained here nearly all winter sofar we had some few cold days and one pretty smart snow but it soon went off with a rain and it is a raining now. I wrote to Margaret a day or two a go. if she has not got the letter tell her how to direct her letters. and tell the rest of the folks the same.
