Commanded the Battalion of St. Louis Riflemen 4 Cos. of well drilled and disciplined of St. Louis militia. maj J Smith Maj Jno. C. Smith. St. Louis. Drill Master. C. S. A. Ala. Dept. Presented by Jos. Boyce to Mo. H. Soc. July 3/15" (written on reverse side). Maj. Smith was a member of the St. Louis militia battalion, but was held as a prisoner at Johnson's Island during the war (John Smith papers, MHM archives).
