Title: Henry G. Brookings and John Gunn residence, 2809 Dayton, and Asa Wallace residence, 2811 Dayton.

Description:

Vertical, black and white photograph showing 2809 Dayton and 2811 Dayton. The two residences are joined in a single three-story stone building with a mansard roof. The building has two exterior doors. A car with a trailer is parked in front of the building, and several young men or boys can be seen standing around the trailer.

In 1873, Henry G. Brookings purchased 2809 Drayton and his brother-in-law Asa Wallace purchased 2811 Dayton. Brookings, a partner in the Samuel Cupples Woodenware Company, lived at 2809 Dayton with his brother Robert S. Brookings, also a partner in the company, until 1889. Brookings then sold the residence to John W. Gunn, secretary of the Goddard Wholesale Grocery Company. Gunn lived in the house until his death in 1910. Wallace, also a partner in the Samuel Cupples Woodenware Company, lived at 2811 Dayton until 1889. He sold the house in 1891 to realtors who leased the building to tenants. For details of the subsequent owners of both properties and biographical sketches of Henry Brookings, Robert Brookings, and Asa Wallace, see the back of prints 5434 (S.3.1.43) and 5436 (S.3.1.44) and the associated manuscript 5435 (SNDC 3-01-0043M).
