Title: Ernest H. Peugnet, Captain (Union).

Description: Tintype cased in oval red velvet case. Subject is seated and shown from the waist up facing right. Peugnet was commissioned as Captain and Assistant Quartermaster, U. S. Volunteers by President Abraham Lincoln on March 16, 1863 and served in that capacity until the close of the Civil War. Two, undated, very small handwritten paper notes are in the same envelope with the cased image. One note reads simply, "Cincinnati Spencer House Thur. afternoon March 31st ’64". The other is a note to his wife Ella Thompson, "My dearest Ella, Think sometimes of me. I am sad and lonely yet I love thee dearly. For God’s sake believe me. I will be with you consistently in thought. I know my dear girl you may think it strange but love is something that some can [illegible]. Smile pray for thee and love thee. Share only one hope one love that is you. When you are sad think of poor me alone. I do know my [illegible] For it [illegible] me. I love thee dearly. God bless you my [illegible] pet. Ernest."
