Title: Judge Arnold Krekel.

Description: Full-length portrait of a man with a beard seated at a desk holding a book. "Judge Arnold Krekel President Mo. State Convention that issued emancipation proclamation Jan. 11, 1865" (written on reverse side). Krekel was a German immigrant and slave-owning Republican from St. Charles who was the editor of the "St. Charles Demokrat." He was the commander (Colonel) of the St. Charles Home Guards and served as the President of the Missouri Constitutional Convention in 1865. He signed the emancipation proclamation that freed slaves in the state of Missouri (Gerteis 2001: 75-76 and digital soldier records).
