Title: Safety Zone Post, Compton Avenue and Clark Avenue (Market Street), March 1934.

Description: Road construction in front of George's Market. Inscripton on the photo reads, "Safety Zone Post, Compton Avenue and Market Street, March 13, 1934." Market Street was widened in 1932 as part of a civic improvement campaign. The Compton Avenue Viaduct is visible at right. One of St. Louis' earliest baseball parks, Red Stocking Park, was located at Compton & Market in the 1870s. The Red Stockings were one of two professional teams in St. Louis during the 1870s. The other team was the St. Louis Browns who played at the St. Louis Ball Park on North Grand, at the site of later-day Sportsman's Park. Both fields were used by amateur teams as well.
