Title: North side of the 2300 block of Washington Avenue.

Description: North side of the 2300 block of Washington Avenue. The St. Louis Coliseum is visible at the corner of Washington Avenue and Jefferson Avenue. A sign outside the Coliseum advertises an opportunity to see, "'Sophie Tucker in Person." Built in 1908, the St. Louis Coliseum was a true multipurpose facility. At different times it housed swimming performances, horse races, tennis matches, balls, circuses, wrestling matches, and the 1916 Democratic National Convention. The facility was never financially successful, partly because of limited parking nearby at a time when people were becoming more dependant on automobiles, but also because of competition from the Kiel Auditorium and the St. Louis Arena. The building was eventually condemned and demolished in 1953.
