Loyal to the Union, he served as Surgeon General for Missouri and as consulting surgeon at the City Hospital during the war. He developed several notable surgical implements that aided in the care for wounded soldiers. His Hodgen splint was a simple, cheap, and easy-to-apply device that allowed a patient to rest comfortably during recovery from a broken leg.
