Title: Olive Street, east from Eighth Street.

Description: Olive Street, looking east from Eighth Street. Wm. Barr Dry Goods Co. is pictured at the northeast corner of Seventh and Olive Streets. William Barr, a native of Scotland, moved to St. Louis in 1849 and joined the dry goods firm of H. D. Cunningham and Co. By the 1850’s the company became the William Barr & Co., and in 1878 the company was incorporated under the name William Barr Dry Goods Company. In 1899 the May Department Store bought William Barr Dry Goods and merged it with the May’s other St. Louis store, Famous, becoming Famous-Barr, a St. Louis store that operated for over 100 years until it was bought by Macy’s in 2005.
