Description: Looking north on Second Street from Market Street during the razing for the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, 1 March 1940. Construction of the monument to westward expansion called for the demolition of buildings that covered a 40-block area that had once comprised the city's commercial center. Demolition started in the mid-1930s and resumed after World War II. Construction of the Gateway Arch was completed in October 1965.
