Description: Street paving work on Eighth Street north of Spruce Street, 30 March 1934. Prior to 1880, when streets began to be paved in granite, St. Louis was known for its muddy or dusty streets. Street paving took off and by 1891 almost all of the downtown business district was paved, with an estimated 41 miles of granite streets throughout the city.
