Title: Washington Avenue, west from Broadway. Several buildings adorned with American flags.

Description: Washington Avenue, west from Broadway. The Grand-Leader Building and several buildings are adorned with American flags. Originally the site of Samuel L. Davis’s wholesale business, Stix, Baer, and Fuller moved their Grand-Leader department store into the building in 1897. Renovated by Boston architects Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge, the building came to include 3 broad staircases, 6 passenger elevators, reception rooms for “tired women and children,” and a soda fountain in the basement. With the tagline “The Fastest Growing Store in America” the building did in fact become too small and would house the department store only until 1906, when it would move to the 800 block of Washington Avenue.
