Title: View of the north side of Lindell Boulevard east of Vandeventer including the Coronado Hotel.

Description: View of Lindell Boulevard east of Vandeventer including the Coronado Hotel, the New Masonic Temple, the Scottish Rite, and the Melbourne Hotel. The Coronado Hotel, a masterpiece of architect Preston Bradshaw, was completed in 1922. Bradshaw, a noted St. Louis architect, was famous for designing luxury apartments and hotels, many of which were on Lindell, including the Melbourne Hotel, seen at the far end of this photo. One of the Coronado’s distinct features was a glass floored ballroom, lit from below. The Coronado’s neighbor, the New Masonic Temple, is a massive structure, covering more than an acre of space. Designed by Thomas Crane Young and Albert B. Groves in 1926, it was intended as a building that would “incorporate the temples of ancient Babylon, of mighty Egypt, and of Classical Greece.” Today it houses over 40 Masonic groups. Just next door, the Scottish Rite Cathedral, another Masonic building, was completed in 1924 by William B. Ittner. At a cost of $2 million when it was constructed it is an imposing structure. It features a 3000 seat auditorium and a massive choir loft. Above the Lindell entrance the motto of a 33° mason is written, “Deus Muenque Jus.”
