Title: Kingshighway Boulevard, Looking North at Parkview Place.

Description: Kingshighway Boulevard near the northern end of Washington University Medical Center. As the city's population drifted west, so did institutions such as hospitals. Barnes Hospital opened in the Central West End in 1914 and became the teaching hospital for Washington University. Children's Hospital and Jewish Hospital also relocated to the medical complex near Kingshighway and Euclid Avenue. Washington University's decision to stay in the Central West End in the 1970s was pivotal for the neighborhood. The university has helped to stabilize the neighborhood by purchasing and redeveloping property in the blocks that surround the medical school.
