Title: Building demolition at the northeast corner of Beaumont Avenue and Market Place, 4 December 1928. [Dr. Gustavus H.E. Baumgarten residence visible in right background].

Description: Building demolition at the northeast corner of Beaumont Avenue and Market Place, 4 December 1928. Dr. Gustavus H.E. Baumgarten's residence is visible in right background. The Polar Wave Ice and Fuel Company is visible on the left side of the image. Dr. Baumgarten was a German immigrant who served as a surgeon in the U.S. Navy during the Civil War. He taught at local universities, including Washington University's medical school. Dr. Baumgarten is representative of the medical professionals who lived in this area due to its proximity to the hospitals that had relocated west of Jefferson Avenue as St. Louisans moved west from downtown.
