Title: Municipal Opera of St. Louis Collection

Description: The Muny began in 1916 in Forest Park when over 200 St. Louisians joined professional actors in putting on a Shakespeare play set on a gently sloping hill in Forest Park. In 1917, a concrete stage was poured for the production of Aida. The success of that event prompted St. Louis Mayor Henry Kiel help raise the money to establish the Municipal Theatre Association of St. Louis in 1919. The Muny has been in continuous operation since then. The Municipal Opera of St. Louis Collection contains photographs taken at the "Muni." There are 15 large photographs of 1932 productions, including an audience shot showing a full house and ushers and vendors, and many shots of the stage, scenery and cast with the orchestra in the foreground. Some are identified in Italian on the reverse. There is also one photo of the curtain call for "My Fair Lady" with the audience and orchestra in the foreground from 1964 and a photograph of the curtain call for the 1928 production of Aida, also with the orchestra in the foreground. See also the Municipal Opera Collection: Production Stills (collection 399 in this guide). Subjects include: dancers; singers; costumes; production of Blue Paradise; MUNY.
