Title: Joseph Hampel Album

Joseph F. Hampel (1900-1962) was born in Carondelet, and lived most of his adult life in the south city area east of Jefferson Avenue. As a young man he worked as a coffee roaster for J. Bockman Brown and Roth-Homeyer Coffee Company. In 1920 he married Lola Ann Thies and they had three children: LaVerne (1921-2004), Gloria (1924-1998), and Emory (1925-2011). By 1935 Joseph was working as a draftsman and mechanical engineer at Century Electric Company, an occupation he would have for the rest of his life. In May of 1962 he was a resident of Webster Groves when he passed away.

The Joseph Hampel Album consists of 98 photographs of various St. Louis buildings, monuments and landmarks dating from 1946. Hampel took the photographs and made the album as a Christmas gift for his daughter, Gloria. In 1940, Gloria moved to Front Royal, Virginia, and soon after she married John Kimmel. The Kimmels made their home primarily in Florida and never returned to St. Louis as residents. According to Ms. Kimmel, the album was accompanied by a note from her father expressing his hope that she would always be proud of the city of her birth.
