Description:

John J. Carroll was employed by the United Railways Company of St. Louis and its successor, St. Louis Public Service Co., for over 40 years. He was a member of the Amalgamated Association of Street and Electric Railway Employees of America, Local No. 788.

Collection consists of professional and personal memorabilia and papers, many of which relate to the St. Louis streetcar industry, especially the United Railways Company of St. Louis and the St. Louis Public Service Co. It includes employee time books, 1908-1929; timetables, transfers, operating instructions, etc.; operating and management manuals; programs and other printed matter; and materials relating to the Employees' Mutual Benefit Association and the companies' savings and loan plans. Also includes materials of the Amalgamated Association of Street and Electric Railway Employees of America, Local No. 788, among which can be found the constitution and by-laws and membership benefits materials; an interview with Carroll published in In Transit, the publication of the Amalgamated Transit Union, April 1975; several issues of the St. Louis Public Service Company newsletter Transit News, 1944-1962; Carroll's correspondence; newsclippings; invitations; and several commencement programs from St. Louis schools, including John Burroughs School, Clayton High School, Mary Institute, St. Louis Country Day School, and Horton Watkins High School in Ladue, 1940s and 1950s.
