Title: U.S. Dragoons officer's full dress coat of Stephen Watts Kearny
Description: Dark blue wool broadcloth double-breasted coat (short in front with tails at back). 2 columns of 10 buttons down front for a total of 20 buttons. Brass clasp for closure at waist. The buttons have an eagle with a "D" in a shield on its breast (designating "Dragoons"). High collar (3") with wide gold lace on front side and gold lace only around edge on back side. There should be 2 button on each side of collar, but one is missing from the proper right side. Collar has three hook and eye closures. Shoulders have 4 small holes on top for the ribbon ties of the epaulets. Tails with buff facing and sewn buff turnbacks. Each tail having 4 segments of gold lace with 1 button in each segment. A fifth button is above at the back waist. (The proper right back waist button is missing.) Each tail has a metal embroidered star at the tip. Tight sleeves with buff collars and buff facing. Like the tails each cuff has 4 segments of gold lace with a button on each. Coat is lined with buff silk and quilted. Tails are lined with buff cotton[?]. There is a light brown leather waistband on the inside marked as noted.
